On October 3, 1946, the famous "Mitropa" operation took place, carried out by the AK-WiN unit operating in Podlasie under the command of Lieutenant Tadeusz Marczuk alias "Snowstorm". A detachment of several dozen people in Szaniawy-Poniaty near Trzebieszów stopped the "Mitropa", a Soviet military-diplomatic train running on the Moscow-Warsaw-Berlin route, and without bloodshed, over 200 Red Army soldiers were disarmed and stripped of their uniforms, including five generals and several high-ranking NKVD officers. going to a military meeting in Warsaw. On October 2, 2016, a monument commemorating this event was unveiled in Szaniawy-Poniaty. It is designed in the shape of a circle with a diameter of 20 meters. In the central point there is a cross around which 20 concrete slabs with cut-out silhouettes of soldiers are placed. The monument was designed by Jan Raniszewski.
